It's hard to imagine Egypt becoming any worse than it is now, but if the situation highlighted above is not rectified, it will be.

Well the US will give unconditional support to the Egyptian government as long as they maintian their peace treaty with Israel. Everything else they do is considered a non-issue by every politician in the US. I think this does a lot of damage to our credibility, but there has been a strong bi-partisan consesus to make the world safe for Israel that has trumped US national interests now for some time. Eisenhower and Bush the elder are the only two presidents to have ever bucked this trend and no Democrat has ever dissented from this line while in power.
