The old-timers here (isn't that all of us?) will remember our discussion, late in 2006 about the exact location of the The Simpsons' hometown of Springfield. Well, it does seem like any certain answers are wrong, as the article here shows quite nicely. Incidentally, this idea of getting public/civic institutions to come together and bid competitively for the largesse of a private enterprise... how very American. Surely, this is just the kind of thing our friends Bart, Homer, Marge, Maggy and Lisa would be expected to poke fun at? Too much chutzpah by a mile, methinks.
Also, while I'm at it, Ayatollah still needs to point out my English fault.... do it, damn it, I'm waiting.

Given that you converted to Shi'ism in order to marry, Najeeb, you would be well advised not to irritate Ayatollah Aydin Kentish Angelistani, perhaps the greatest Shi'a religious authority...well, the greatest who regularly visits my blog, anyway. As for the Iraq deal: The Americans now realise what many were telling them all along, that they were jumping out of Saddam's pan into Iran's fires. They need to save their skin, and fast. I think it's a fairly obvious/well-known observation to conclude that there are two attitudes to this: Bomb Iran; work with Iran. It seems that the Manachean battle taking place within the US Administration has not produced a clear, and so there will be a two-pronged approach until one or the other begins to produce tangible results.
As for Gaza: I think Olmert needs to something for his own political career; I can't believe I as a Palestinian can say this, but there is something quite pathetic about an Israeli government which seems to fail--to fail!!--militarily. It seems highly unlikely that he will try to attack Gaza, for 2 very simple reasons. Firstly: Withdrawal from Gaza was perhaps the last popular move with which Olmert was associated. Secondly: Hamas looks like it's beginning to break the political blockade on Palestine. Watch what happens if they succeed in freeing this BBC reporter...
